Congratulations to ABC15 I-Team and our very own Board of Governor, Vik Narayan for receiving the Peabody Award for uncovering Sky Harbor security lapse.
ABC15HD / KNXV-TV is a winner of the 2007 George Foster Peabody Award for The Investigators undercover exposé of lapses in security screening at Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport.
The George Foster Peabody Awards were first presented in 1941 to recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious service by broadcasters, cable and webcasters, producing organizations, and individuals.
Today the George Foster Peabody Awards are often cited as the most selective and prestigious in electronic media. Each year, from more than one thousand entries, the Peabody Board selects the most outstanding works by unanimous vote. Though there is no set number of awards, no more than 36 have ever been presented in a single year. ABC15 HD is the only Arizona station, and one of four local news stations in the country, to win this award in 2007.
The ABC15 Investigators documented a serious overnight threat unfolding at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, the eighth busiest airport in the United States.
X-Ray machines were turned off, metal detectors closed, bags and people going unchecked, unscreened, as they walked past on-duty airport security. Documents obtained by the ABC15 Investigators showed how it’s an ongoing problem and common practice happening for nearly two years.
The station brought in a nationally recognized top airline security expert who was a former head of security at a major airline to evaluate the evidence on site. It is an investigation that received national exposure on ABC Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight and CNN.
This prestigious award is one of many for ABC15 News and the ABC15 Investigators. They include the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting and several Rocky Mountain Emmys for Investigative Journalism, Breaking News, and Overall News Excellence. ABC15 News is the most recognized organization for excellence in quality journalism in the State of Arizona.
Congratulations to ABC15 I-Team and our very own Board of Governor, Vik Narayan
