2010 Journalism Jumpstart Workshop Series
The face of journalism is evolving faster than in any other time in history – are you prepared? The local chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) want to help members and non-members alike with its first-event Journalism Jumpstart Workshop Series, sponsored by Media Watch AZ.
Throughout the coming months, the organizations will offer a series of six (6) workshops focused on helping members of the media as well as other communications disciplines develop new skills as well as sharpen older ones. Members and non-members are invited to attend as many workshops as they like, based on their needs.
Light desserts and beverages will also be provided.
COST: FREE to NATAS and SPJ members
$10 per seminar for non-members who RSVP in advance
$15 per seminar for non-members at the door

WORKSHOP ONE: Getting the Job

WORKSHOP TWO: Social Media Reporting and Engagement

DETAILS: More and more, members of the media – from radio to television to print – are working to create a dedicated online tribe of brand evangelists that supports, shares and responds to their brand on a regular basis. But, how do you do this as a member of the media? What are some best practices? What are some worst practices/horror stories? How do you get noticed in the online space? And how is it possible to sustain and grow the tribe over time? Simply put – it takes proactivity, creativity and time. Just because you build it, doesn’t mean they will come.
This panel wants to help. Over the past several years, our panelists have jumped into the social media world head-first via viral video, Facebook, Twitter, blogging, LinkedIn and much more. This workshop will give you the tools to research, report, promote and engage in the social media landscape as well as insight into developing your brand in the online space.

WORKSHOP THREE: The One-Hour MBA

DETAILS: As business staffs shrink or are merged into other news departments, more and more general assignment reporters are being asked to do stories for which they are very ill-prepared. Quarterly earnings, annual reports, 10Ks, SEC filings - all of these can be foreign terms to many journalists outside the financial field but when studied properly by a trained reporter, they can yield many, many juicy and amazing stories. Learn the basics of reporting business news, one of the first areas where media have been hiring staff as the economy recovers.

WORKSHOP FOUR: Work from Home: Making a Living in the Freelance World

WORKSHOP FIVE: Tips and Training for Web and Broadcast Reporting

DETAILS: This seminar will provide live instruction to journalists on how to present to the camera for both web and broadcast reporting. Topic points to include the difference between live, recorded and web vs broadcast reporting. Kevin will provided instruction on package formats, file sizes that work best for web uploading and distribution

Kathy Kerschner spent 15 years in the media trenches asking the tough questions—now she’s teaching you how to answer them. In her workshops and seminars, Kathy likes to have fun, but she’s serious about helping you become a better communicator.

WORKSHOP SIX: New Ethics for the New World of Media

DETAILS: Can we still apply professional ethical principles to the constant posting of news and information online? Is it sufficient to simply say, “Post it now; if it’s wrong, we’ll just update it”? News is moving faster and getting edited less than ever. Since credibility is the journalist’s only real selling point, learn how to be ethical, accurate and credible in this digital age.
PANELISTS:
Two adjunct professors of journalism ethics at the Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Richard Ruelas, feature writer for the Arizona Republic and former news columnist and Mark Scarp, formerly of the East Valley Tribune and currently membership coordinator for the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.
