2007 Walter Cronkite Scholarship RecipientsEach year, the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards four one thousand dollar scholarships to deserving students of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University. This year, the recipients are Erika Flores, Toby Phillips, Matthew Pagel, and Eric Fink.
Erika Flores has worked at Channel 8 KAET as a production assistant and her ideal career would be to be a reporter for 60 Minutes or 20/20. Erika would also like to work for a travel show someday. Erika transferred to Arizona State from Central Arizona College. Her extracurricular activities include being in the drama club and student government. She has also gained professional media experience as an intern with Telemundo as an on-camera reporter.
Toby Phillips envisions himself traveling abroad and possibly participating in the Peace Corps. Toby feels this experience would encourage him to become a foreign correspondent for a national or international news agency. Toby came to Arizona State from Albuquerque, New Mexico and has worked at the student radio station, The Blaze 1260 AM. Toby is active in the Leadership Scholarship Program, NATAS and the ASU Student Foundation. He also made the Cronkite School’s Dean’s List.
Matthew Pagel has been involved with Sun Devil TV Channel 2 working as a member of the technical staff for “Devils on the Deuce”, as well as anchoring for the college football-based show, “Sun Devil Sidelines”. His ultimate goal is to be a news anchor or sports broadcaster in a major market. Matthew has interned at Fox Sports Net and his extracurricular activities include playing sports, snowboarding and officiating soccer.
Eric Fink was part of the inaugural Cronkite Village where he enjoyed living with other Cronkite School students and going on field trips to various media outlets in Phoenix. Like Toby, Eric has also been a staff member on the Blaze radio station. He hopes to become a broadcaster for one of the national television or radio networks and would love to call sporting events such as the Super bowl or the World Series. Eric also has an interest in becoming a news anchor and one day would like to cover election results for a national presidential or congressional election. Congratulations to our 2007 Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter NATAS Scholarship recipients.
